amparo
◆ glossary

The vocabulary of the desk.

Every term amparo uses, defined in a sentence you can quote — from free bets to the vault. If a guide used a word you didn't know, it's here.

Matched betting

A technique that turns a bookmaker's free bet or boosted-odds promotion into cash: you place the promo bet and cover the opposite outcome elsewhere, so a similar amount comes back whichever side wins. The profit is the value of the free stake, not a gamble on the result. Full guide →

Free bet

A promotional stake given by a bookmaker that can be wagered but not withdrawn: if it wins, the winnings are paid but the stake itself is not returned; if it loses, you get nothing.

Lay bet

A bet against an outcome happening — the role traditionally played by a betting exchange. On a prediction market you achieve the same thing more directly by buying the opposite outcome.

Hedge

A second position taken to offset the risk of a first, sized so the combined result is the same regardless of how the event resolves. Matched betting is a hedge that happens to lock in a profit.

Prediction market

A market where each outcome of a future event trades as a share that settles at 1 if it happens and 0 if it doesn't — so the price, between 0 and 1, reads directly as the market's estimated probability. Full guide →

Non-custodial

An arrangement where you hold the private keys to your own funds and the platform never can — so it cannot freeze, lose or spend your money, even if it wanted to or were breached. Full guide →

Self-custody

Holding and controlling your own crypto assets directly through your own keys, rather than trusting a third party to hold them. The upside is control; the responsibility is your own password and recovery.

Private key

The secret that authorizes spending from a wallet. Whoever holds it controls the funds — which is why, in a non-custodial setup, it is generated and kept encrypted on your own device and never leaves it.

SEPA

The Single Euro Payments Area — the standard bank-transfer network for moving euros. amparo moves euros in and out over SEPA through the user's own Kraken or Coinbase account, then converts to and from USDC.

USDC

A US-dollar stablecoin, each unit intended to hold a value of one dollar. It's the settlement currency across the prediction markets amparo aggregates, and the currency of its flat membership fee.

Perpetual (perp)

A derivative that tracks an asset's price with no expiry date, letting a trader hold a long or short position for as long as they choose. amparo trades perps on Hyperliquid, signed on the user's own keys.

Slippage

The difference between the price you expected and the price you actually got, caused by the market moving or by thin liquidity between placing and filling an order. Sizing and speed keep it small — which matters most when locking a matched bet.

Gasless

A transaction whose network ("gas") fee is covered another way — in amparo's case via CoW Protocol — so you don't need to hold a chain's native token just to act on it.

Bridge

Moving assets from one blockchain to another. amparo bridges over Across, and moves native USDC across chains via Circle's CCTP, so funding and withdrawal work from any balance on any chain.

Currency protection

An optional EUR/USD hedge that keeps euro-funded dollar balances flat in euros when the exchange rate moves. It costs about 0.04% to open, runs on your own keys, and offsets currency drift only — not a losing bet or trade.

Vault

amparo's small open-source app on its own origin, vault.amparo.systems, where the password is typed, the key is unlocked, and every transaction is decoded and approved. It's hash-pinned, so anyone can verify the live page serves exactly the published code. How it works →
